Darrin - I believe the speedo you have is colloquially
called the "potato masher" after the WWII German hand
grenades. This (or similar) is probably what the 1927
dealer book will show:

I'm no expert, but I don't think these were fitted at the
factory by any of the manufacturers. They were just an
aftermarket accessory that could be mounted to any
production bike of the day. Certianly the book that that
scan came from listed mounting parts/details for Harley
and Indian as well as Henderson and Excelsior.
I believe the 100mph JM max hand head:

is what is considered to have been standard equipment on
the 27 Hendersons ... Perry

that the model 84-A and 84-B were offered on the 1927 and
1928 Deluxe the 84-B was offered on the 1928 Henderson

Hi Perry,

You are very perceptive and correct in your assumption that
the 1927 Deluxe was fitted with the J-M speedo. I have seen
xtremely unmolested '27 (except for a lousy
overpaint)and another machine untouched for years both
fitted with complete dashes that had that speedo. I also
have one for my o/p '27. Henderson used those God awful
switches in '27, Super X as well. Hopefully you have that
as it is the harder item to find. Strange they deviated one
then went back to the Corbin for the '28 model. If
your bent on the judging, I would go with J-M. Also you may
h someone napping, not knowing what that speedo is, i.e.
maybe not m/c or aftermarket and be able to grab it for
shorter money than the Corbin. You also need to be aware
that the angle drive, internal ends and cable ferrels are
also different than Corbin. This is not a major problem if
you go to auto swop meets where pre 1930 parts are sold.
Check Hemmings as well.

Would anyone like to weight in on what is the correct
speedo for a 1927 Deluxe? The speedo in the brochure
clearly isn't a Corbin. Were bikes delivered as shown
in the brochure? Is the correct speedo a Johns-Mansville
(that's what the brochure photo looks like to me (which
by this time may have been the JM model Stewart-Warner))?
Is a Corbin accepted in judging? Thanks ... Perry
