Hi Guys
Just to add to the discussion on DeLuxe Cyclinders, did you
all know that the 1920/21 Model K cyclinders were different
to the Deluxe? They are very similar but if you put the
Model K next to a Deluxe some of the differences are pretty
obvious. I thought I would mention it because if you picked
up a Model K cylinder at a swap meet, it may not be so
obvious if you had nothing to compare it to - and it won't
fit on your Deluxe! Here are the differences
Base flange area is the same so either will fit on the other
case but the flange itself is only 5/16" thick on a K
compared to 13/32" on the Deluxe. Inlet/exhaust port bores
are smaller on the K - 1" dia, DeLuxe is 1-1/8". More
importantly the stud spacings are smaller - K=1-23/32",
DeLuxe = 1-15/16" - so the inlet/exhaust manifolds don't
interchage. The finning is also different. Both have the
same number of horizontal and vertical fins but there are
differences. The Deluxe has larger fins particulary in the
exhaust port area. Also when looking at the front/rear views
of the cylinder, the outside edge of the fins are straight -
the K's fin edge dips in following the contour of the
cylinder bore/port pockets. The real giveaway is the fin
pattern at the top of the cylinder. The K has 6 vertical
fins on the top horizontal fin plus 2 more vertcal fins on
the second horizontal fin. The Deluxe has 4 vertical fins on
each of the top two horizontal fins. Valves and combustion
chamber shape on my K cylinders are the same as that on my
Deluxe cylinders so I assume the Deluxe cyclinders are early
ones. The thread for the valve cap is the same though the
caps themselves differ - The K has four low height 'fins,
whereas the Deluxe has six taller fins
All dimensions given are give or take a bit so please don't
quote me on them!

Also, the early factory literature on the Model K show a
round exhaust port stub. I've never seen one of these though
I understand a few were made before it was changed to the
flat 2 stud flange we are all familiar with.

Incidently the Ricardo factory is only about 35 miles from
me. They are still in the business of engine development. A
pal of mine is currently involved in some research work on
cylinder head design for them using the facilities at the
University of Brighton - it's a small world!

Thats all for now folks - must go and get my anorak from the
dry cleaners.....

----- ORIGINAL MESSAGE FOLLOWS -----
Having recently bought a couple of De-luxe cylinders as
spare for my -27 De-luxe (you newer know do you) from e-bay,
found when recieved that I could not recognize the
internal layout in one of the cylinder-heads.
Having called mr. knows everything Rob Olsen I learned that
the 28`s had a internal layout simmilar to the later KJ`s as
oth where constructed with the help of mr. Ricardo back
then.

If possible this information should have been added to the
excellent page on this site showing differences in Henderson
e-luxe, KJ and KL cylinders.
Perry I could possibly lend a digital camera if there is no
pic. availiable. Let me know.

Oh yes by the way, I was told by Rob that using 28 cylinders
y engine would drastically improve. This of course force me
to look for three more 28 cylinders, sigh!
Let me know if there are anyone around.
