Just to let you guys know I'm still lurking around this
site. Big Steve and I went round and round on this even
though numerous pictures showed police bikes with black
rims. He always felt black rims were later replacement rims.
I always felt if they were available for police, anyone
could have them. My 31 KL was done black rimmed and looked
bitchin that way. We always kidded each other on this until
the end. Marty

When Cliff Pease restored my 1931 KJ, he painted the wheels
black. I don't think he would have done this if it was on a
whim. I think my bike was originally a NYC police bike that
John Scharle purchased. His wheels were black. I also have
a vintage photo of a police KJ with black wheels.

I don't feel qualified at all to challenge the words of
Steve Ciccalone but it can be found in the Exchanges
webpages in the Facts and Fables in the Restoral Society
painting notes that the wheels were available in black in
1930-on.

Thank you for information. I bought KJ with black rims,
but I like ivory version. Maybe i will thinking about
repainting.

The few period photographs and illustrations from factory
literature show ivory wheels.

But look here:
http://hendersonkj.com/ffo/wheels/blackwheels.html

The late Steve Ciccalone stated that he had found no
proof that Hendersons ever came with black wheels from
the factory.

The previous owner painted the wheels black on my KJ. I
must say they are easier to keep clean than ivory ones.
Perhaps the police departments thought the same thing...
