I am in the process of timing my KJ. The engine is out of the frame with intake manifold off. I intend to keep the intake manifold off until after the engine is installed in the frame for ease of engine installation.

I am rotating the engine by way of the sprocket.

The "S" just barely appears in the timing hole (way off to one side - left side of engine) when the points break open - magneto is in full advance position.

Then I continue to rotate the engine. The "EC" appears in the hole. The #4 exhaust valve tappet is just barely free when the "EC" almost disappears within the timing hole (off to one side - right side of engine).

I have the exhaust tappets set to .008" - .009". Any less (any tighter), and the "EC" would totally disappear within the timing hole before the valve tappet would wiggle free.

Does this sound OK? Is it normal for these letters to be off to one side within the timing hole?
