The Henderson community celebrated the Glorious Day - Henderson's 100th Anniversary - at the AMCA Perkiomen Chapter's national swap meet in Oley, Pennsylvania, April 27-28, 2012. The weather was cold and windy, but that didn't stop us from bringing what was probably the largest gathering of Hendersons in the last 50 years. We have lost some of the legends of our community in the last few years - Carl Vandre, Dick Winger, and just last year, Steve Ciccalone. Steve, a member of the AMCA Chesapeake chapter, has been a fixture at Oley for many, many years. We decided to honor his memory by calling this celebration the Ciccalone Gathering of Hendersons. Steve's son David attended the Gathering to witness the enthusiasm for these bikes which his father had fostered. The community turned out in force - 25 Hendersons, mostly Streamlines and De Luxes, lined up near Steve's old vendor space. Posters proclaimed the event, and pamphlets which detailed the Henderson heritage and chronology were given to the crowd of on-lookers admiring the display. One person dubbed the display "Million Dollar Corner". The Perkiomen Chapter decided to bestow the two Chapter awards exclusively on Hendersons this year. The coveted Cowbell Award (most spectacular bike) was earned by Richard Correia with his beautiful 1925 De Luxe, while the equally coveted Wire Brush Award (bike most in need of TLC) was garnered by John Rhodes for his original rust 1928 De Luxe with Goulding sidecar. |
